Updated: Oct 28, 2019
It was Stratocaster nirvana at the fabulous Fox Theater in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday April 3, 2014 as some of the best guitar players in the world paid homage to probably the most influential rock musician; Jimi Hendrix.
Experience Hendrix began with a montage of pictures and film clips of Hendrix performances accompanied by his music greeting the audience as they made their way into the theater. As the lights were lowered, Janie Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix sister welcomed us all to this festival of sound.
Billy Cox, along with Dani Robinson, Stan Skibby, and drummer Chris Layton, kicked off the show with a burning rendition of "Stone Free". Billy played with Jimi Hendrix in Band of Gypsies and Cry of Love.
Dani and Stan are equally superb musicians with equal parts showman. That is one thing about Hendrix that made him the icon he is today. The man obviously could play, but he also put on a show. Dani and Stan know this fact well.
"Stanskibby brought some flavor with is festive fashions and expressive playing during the opening montage of the Experience Hendrix tour "
More than 40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix’s music lives on and continues to influence musicians of all flavors. The Experience Hendrix Tour is just one example of how some of today’s talented players continue to pass the torch of the almighty mystical muse and guitar great. This year’s lineup includes StanSkibby, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa, Eric Gales, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Buddy Guy, and bassist Billy Cox—the last surviving member of both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys.
